SEPT 23 News Heels Pull Out 1-0 Victory Over Virginia

Tonight the Men's Soccer group beat the Virginia Cavaliers. The game was played at home in the course of alumni week, and therefore drew a large crowd and also coverage by Fox Soccer Channel. The Tar Heels emerged winners by a score of 1-0, with an intense game punctuated by challenging fouls (Real Madrid Jersey), wonderful saves, and ultimately a single objective from Andy Craven.

The Cavaliers posed a stern test for the Heels. Although Virginia is not ranked, they are a team loaded with young talent and their schedule this year is amongst the hardest in college soccer. As such (Spain Adidas Jersey), they lead the national RPI. Virginia can also be a perennial ACC power and they won the College Cup itself just two years ago, so they had been far from an easy opponent (soccer jerseys), even for the defending national champs.

The Tar Heels were made to adapt their style rapidly, for the Virginia midfield was designed about stopping the short passing game the Heels favor. Tight marking across the center of midfield along with a rash of early Virginia fouls within the center of the pitch meant that the Tar Heels would need to find an alternate route towards purpose. To counter this tactic, the Heels spread the field well to open up space for any pass and then created lengthy passes towards the open players (RONALDO JERSEY 2013), though extended balls are much more difficult to strike with accuracy (Barcelona Soccer Jersey), and this resulted in the Tar Heels becoming somewhat much less potent within the attack.

The first half brought a few excellent probabilities , with Martin Murphy drawing a fine early save off of a dipping free kick. The following excellent possibility fell to Virginia's Will Bates (Messi jersey), who fought 3 defenders off of a lifted ball and managed a challenging shot at purpose, which luckily was directed straight at UNC keeper Scott Goodwin. The Cavaliers followed that up having a nicely struck corner , which resulted within a header being snatched up by Goodwin. The introduction of UNC's Josh Rice towards the game saw him almost score with his very first touch (Manchester United Jersey) , as a beautiful cross field pass allowed him to make a run and shoot on aim from the left side of the box (germany soccer jersey), drawing a fine save from UVA keeper Spencer LaCivita.

The second half livened up considerably, with all the Tar Heels scoring just immediately after the break. A lengthy pass to Danny Garcia set him up to give Andy Craven a brilliant lifted through ball in to the right side from the box, which permitted Craven to run onto objective and slot the ball home among the keeper's legs. The Cavaliers were quick to respond, using a cross coming off of a deflected corner kick almost getting directed home , save for a goal line clearance from the UNC defense.

Following the objective and also the UNC clearance , Danny Garcia broke totally free and was harshly brought down after nearly skipping past the UVA back line (Custom soccer jerseys), resulting within a UNC totally free kick and a yellow card for the offender. Garcia seemed to take a bit of a knock, but was able to help keep playing. This foul began a period of rough play which resulted inside a savage tackle from Virginia's Matt Brown getting rewarded using a yellow card and with Virginia striker Will Bates drawing a no cost kick just outside the box when he was pulled down from behind by his shirt.

The final third with the game saw the Tar Heels practically double their advantage by way of Cam Brown following his late run on the wing resulted within a sumptuous shot (cheap soccer jerseys), but after that point saw the Tar Heels largely close out the game in their own half. Virginia's Darius Madison did well to nearly get through the Tar Heel defense when his run was fed by a lifted via pass, but his shot hit the post and his run was referred to as offside. He also tested Scott Goodwin in purpose using a properly struck header , but this was Goodwin's night and he was by no means likely to concede. The Tar Heel defense played properly, and did a superb job to close out the game with the help of goalkeeper Goodwin.
